27-year-old Prince William is actively involved with several major charities in the UK, which is why his latest endeavor in this sense might not come as a huge surprise. What does come as a bit of a shock though is, as Sky News points out, the amount and the darker color of his hair in a recent charity photo published in Hello! Magazine, shot by former addict Jeff Hubbard, who thus officially became the first civilian to make an official portrait of the Prince.

Mr. Hubbard is not only a former addict, but he was also homeless until recently, so one can only imagine the kind of surprise he had when he was told he was about to take a picture of none other than Prince William. He tells the magazine that the shoot went on really wonderfully and that the Prince is truly a great person to be around – however, he offers no explanation for why William appears with a full head of hair, which, to cap it all off, is also almost pitch black.

“After recent shots during his visit to Australia exposed the heir to the throne’s thinning locks, the new picture has led to speculation that he has turned to hair dye to combat his changing looks. It is not clear whether the dark hair sported by the Prince was down to a little cosmetic help, lighting or computer trickery. But in several of the other photos published in Hello! magazine, the Prince’s traditional dark blonde locks are back on display. The photos were taken by former drug addict Jeff Hubbard, who has become the first member of the public to take an official portrait of Prince William,” Sky News writes.

Indeed, side by side comparisons of older photos of Prince William and the one now on the cover of the magazine reveal that the difference is striking to say the least. Not only does the Prince have more hair, but it’s also darker, when an entire world knows that he’s actually quite blonde in real life. The probability of him dyeing his hair is rather low, the aforementioned publication says, so his darker, richer mane must only be the result of the combined efforts of good lighting and some good studio trickery.

Be that as it may, the photo should serve a different purpose. “The diptych is a reminder of the way in which all of us – whatever path our lives have taken – are ultimately neighbors and share a common bond. Jeff’s experience of homelessness was an isolating and traumatic one, but now with the help of Crisis, his life has hope and purpose again,” the Prince tells Hello! about agreeing to take part in the new charity campaign, which also saw him behind the camera, shooting Hubbard’s portrait.
