The three new species risk becoming extinct in the not so distant future

Specialists writing in the journal Zookeys detail the discovery of three new species of carnivorous snails.

Sadly, all three of these new species risk falling off the biodiversity map in the years to come, thanks to people's destroying their natural habitats.

“More than 50% of limestone ecosystems in this region have been or still are being destroyed,” wildlife researcher Somsak Panh says.

The snails inhabit north and north-east Thailand, Mongabay informs us. They measure less than one centimeter in length, and spend most of their time hidden from sight in rock crevices.

Their diet mainly consists of insect larvae and earthworms, the researchers explain. Still, they sometimes prey and feed on other snails that chance to cross their path.

The three species belong to the family Streptaxidae. Their names are Perrottetia aquilonaria, P. dermapyrrhosa and P. phuphamanesis.
