Extended capacity and higher performance

As far as Flash-based storage is concerned, technology can only enable higher and higher capacities with each new development. On that note, Pretec, a leading manufacturer of Flash-based storage solutions, the creator of the highest capacity CompactFlash card in the world (100GB) and the fastest CF card in the world (433X), has recently announced the new SDXC (extend capacity) 32GB memory card, which was showcased at the company's booth at CeBIT in Hanover, Germany.

The new product will enable consumers to take advantage of an increased storage capacity and a high level of performance with read/write speeds of up to 50MB/s, depending on the host system design. The solution is designed to use the exFAT file system, which is not compatible with the FAT32 one employed by the company's SDHC cards. Unfortunately, PC users will have to wait until these cards can be used with their own devices, as no current one is compatible with the SDXC technical features.

According to Pretec, the newly-announced 32GB SDXC card, which is currently sampled to design-in customers, should be accompanied by a double-capacity solution. This 64GB SDXC solution is slated for availability in the second half of this year.

In addition to the high capacity 32GB SDXC, Pretec has also unveiled a 100GB CF card with a speed of up to 100MB/s, designed to provide users with the highest speed, small form factor memory card in the world. According to Pretec, this product will most likely be the last of the high-speed CF cards, as technology has brought us closer to the theoretical maximum speed of CompactFlash specification of 133MB/s.

In addition to these new products, Pretec has further introduced two new EpressCard SSDs with capacities of 64GB and 128GB. Designed for notebook users, these SSD solutions promise read/write speeds of up to 38MBps/30MBps, respectively.
