IBM, one of the world's leading suppliers of high-end supercomputers, has announced today that President Obama has recognized the company's Blue Gene family of supercomputers with the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, for the breakthroughs in science, energy efficiency and analytics. The National Medal of Technology and Innovation is the country's most prestigious award given to leading innovators for technological achievement.

The Blue Gene technology, which IBM has implemented in its high-end supercomputers, has already been recognized for enabling an energy-efficient design, a statement that is only emphasized by the fact that 18 out of 20 most energy efficient supercomputers are built on the company's high-performance computing technology, according to the most recent listing from the Supercomputing 'Green500 List', announced back in July 2009.

The speed and overall design of the Blue Gene supercomputer has enabled business and science to address a wide range of complex calculations. Other areas where the Blue Gene technology has been used include astronomy, climate simulations, modeling and many others, with such systems being used to map the human genome, investigate medical therapies, safeguard nuclear arsenals, simulate radioactive decay and more, according to the Armonk, New York-based company.

Recognizing the performance and capabilities of IBM's Blue Gene technology, President Obama has awarded IBM with the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. The President will personally bestow the award at a special White House ceremony, which is said to take place on the 7th of October. This will be IBM's eighth National Medal of Technology and Innovation, following seven others that were received on previous occasions. In addition, this year IBM is the only company to have received the recognition.

IBM's leadership in the supercomputer segment is also proven by the company's 'Roadrunner' project, which enabled it to hold the number one spot in the Top 500 Supercomputer List for the 10th consecutive time.
