SEGA doesn’t know exactly when the cab is going to be here, but they’re letting everyone know that Crazy Taxi is going to be available for download on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch really soon.

According to a fresh post on the official SEGA blog, “The most madcap of cab games is coming to iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. When? Whenever the cab gets here — which will be soon!”

SEGA says to stay tuned for more information, which is highly discouraging since the announcement makes you think it’s just around the corner. What are we supposed to stay tuned for? Trailers? Screenshots? Or the actual game release?

Anyway, those who aren’t very familiar with the game should know that it was a hit on the SEGA Dreamcast console, as well as in arcades around the world around the year 2000.

The gameplay is as simple as it is addictive. You drive around in a cab on San Francisco’s hilly streets, taking people to their destination as quickly as possible. Along the way, you can score extra cash by performing crazy stunts.

The player is directed by a large green arrow at the top of the screen which doesn’t take obstacles into account – it only points in the general direction of the goal.

As the player closes in on the destination, he / she must stop within a specified area, much like in the Driver series of video games.

The customer's fare is added to the player's total money earned when the player completes his / her route.

Ratings are then awarded depending on how long you took to complete the route and, if the customer's timer runs out before you reach the destination, he / she will jump from the car.

We’d usually end a story like this with a traditional “buckle up,” but SEGA said to stay tuned. We’ll take that as a “stay put.”
