Fotoxx 14.06, a free, open source Linux photo editing and collection management program that’s easy to use and install, has been released.

The Linux platform is the home of many applications and most of what a user might need can be found without any problems. Unfortunately, simple image editing is still an issue. There are a few applications that can get the job done, but some are way too complicated and others are not free.

Fotoxx provides a hassle-free solution to simple photo editing and library management and it comes with too many features to count, such as RAW editing, menu-driven function selection, numerous formats supported, brightness/color/gamma curves, pixelation suppression, trimming, cropping, HDR support, numerous metadata functions, multiple core supports, and much more.

According to the changelog, the window “tabs” paradigm has been revised in order to improve the space utilization, a custom convolution kernel can now be edited and applied to an image, thumbnails are now generated automatically for RAW files lacking the embedded thumbnails, and the images can now be moved and warped with the mouse to fix residual alignment offsets.

Also, the corner markers can now be moved in 1-pixel steps with the keyboard arrow keys, the trimming rectangle can now be moved in 1-pixel steps with the KB arrow keys, the Batch Convert function now has new controls to sharpen output images, the Batch Convert RAW option has new controls that can help to resize and sharpen output images, mashup can now more easily adjust image overlaps and transparencies, and 3 minor bugs have been fixed.

The developer provides two types of file for download, debs and the source. The debs are the easiest to install, but only if you have a Debian-based distribution. If you have anything else than that, you will need to compile from the source.

The software is provided only for the Linux platform and the developer has been pretty clear why he chose to release the software only for this operating system.

“Linux (the entire ecosystem) has been suitable for non-geeks since about 2004. It works well, looks good, has superior security and freedom from malware, has thousands of applications covering almost every need, is adequately supported (online forums), and costs nothing,” said the maker of Fotoxx on his website.

A complete list of changes and updates can be found in the official announcement. You can download Fotoxx 14.06 right now from Softpedia.
