Energy efficiency has become one of the company's chief concerns

If there's something that all high-end video cards have in common, it's that they need a lot of energy to run, and very strong (and, consequently, power-hungry) coolers to avoid heat-induced failure. NVIDIA wants to do something about this.

Sure, there's no way that a small TDP will enable gargantuan performance any time soon, but NVIDIA wants to introduce something new with the Maxwell architecture. The Maxwell mobile chip collection anyhow.

The method is called Power Scaling. There will be three tiers to it. One will consist of 200W+ discrete GPUs, one will include 2W and 3W SoC Tegra parts (and ultra low-voltage GPUs) and the middle tier will, obviously, cover the gap between those two.

Maxwell mobile GPUs will come out this year or the next. Definitely the next for the chips included in Tegra mobile platforms.
