Time magazine has announced its choice for the title of Person of the Year 2013 and, luckily for humankind as a whole, it’s not Miley Cyrus. Pope Francis, who was elected this year after Pope Benedict XVI stepped down, is the Person of the Year.

For the time being, we don’t have the full profile, as it will be included in the latest edition of the publication. It will also be run either in part or in full in the online version of the magazine but, for the time being, all we have to hang on to is the cover that confirms the choice.

Time picks the winner annually after readers vote, but the final decision is up to the staff.

Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina, Pope Francis, has been doing a lot of good since he was elected Pope and is tirelessly working to strengthen people’s faith and promote love and peace.

He is the first non-European Pope in many years, he is the first Pope from South America, he has just one lung, is not decidedly anti-gay and is not afraid of speaking his mind and even taking on the Mafia. He’s very kind and relatable, and always has a few words of encouragement and even a hug for those less fortunate.

With all this, it’s no wonder he’s been chosen for this distinction from Time magazine.

Just last week, before voting still closed, it was pop star Miley Cyrus who seemed favorite to win, having already gathered 20.2% of the readers’ votes. Pope Francis wasn’t even in the top 3, as runnerup was Egyptian Defense Minister Abdel Fattah el-Sisi (18.6%), and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan (18.3%).

Luckily, as noted above, Time staff has the final say in naming the winner, so Miley, as influential and incredibly popular as she might be, lost out to someone who actually makes a difference in this world for the better.

Last year’s most important Person, as per the publication, was US President Barack Obama.
