The head of the development team which is working on Gran Turismo 5 has revealed that his team has wrapped up all development work on the racing simulation title and that they are already working on the next game in the series, looking for ideas that can make the experience revolutionary.

Talking to Autoweek at the SEMA 2010 automobile industry trade show, Kazunori Yamauchi, who is the leader of Polyphony Digital, has confirmed that Gran Turismo 6 is already being worked on, saying “It's not something that we can talk that lightly on. It took 2,000 days to get all the ideas that went into GT5. It's just too early to be talking about GT6.”

He also talked about the long development process for GT5, saying about all the delays “It was really to adjust it so it would be perfect.”

Polyphony Digital says that it has finished working on Gran Turismo 5 and that the game is now in Sony's hands.

At the moment the publisher has not announced a new launch date for the game but rumors are suggesting that it will be out before Christmas rolls around.

Gran Turismo 5 was set to arrive at the beginning of November, after being delayed since the fall of last year, but Sony withdrew that date, with a lot of fans starting to see the game as vaporware.

Gran Turismo 5 aims to simulate no less than 1,000 cars, with about one fifth of them receiving special attention and a damage model while the rest will have generic interiors but can also be used in all races.

The initial delays of Gran Turismo 5 allowed Forza Motorsport 3 to become a best seller which received downloadable content well into this year.

If it comes out before Christmas the game will also face tough competition from the new Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, from Electronic Arts and Criterion.
