Punxsutawney Phil, Pennsylvania's famous weather-predicting groundhog, is in a whole lot of trouble and it's doubtful that being all cute and cuddly will help him save his furry behind.

Long story short, word has it that officers with the Merrimack Police Department in New Hampshire are out to get him and have even issued an arrest warrant for him.

That's right, it could happen that, around this time next year, Punxsutawney Phil will be making his predictions from prison. Who knows, this change of scenery might help him get better at telling the weather.

Punxsutawney Phil deserves being imprisoned

In a Facebook post, officers with New Hampshire's Merrimack Police Department explain that they reason they issued an arrest warrant for Punxsutawney Phil is that he wasn't completely honest when he last predicted the weather.

Thus, the groundhog stands accused of knowingly and purposely having failed to mention that the last six weeks of winter would be terribly harsh and would dump a whole lot of snow on unsuspecting folks in Pennsylvania.

“We have received several complaints from the public that this little varmint is held up in a hole, warm and toasty. He told several people that winter would last 6 more weeks, however he failed to disclose that it would consist of mountains of snow!” the post reads.

Just in case anyone might be bold enough to attempt approaching Punxsutawney Phil on their own, the officers warn that the groundhog is armed and dangerous. They ask that those who happen to see him alert authorities.

Punxsutawney Phil has been predicting the weather for decades

Ever since 1887, Punxsutawney Phil has been hard at work keeping tabs on what Mother Nature might be up to and warning people whether they should brace themselves for a long and harsh winter.

Punxsutawney Phil makes his predictions each year on February 2. He simply emerges from his home, and if he sees his own shadow and sneaks back inside, folks know that winter will last for another 6 weeks.
