Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, according to some people, and there are certain meals that are traditional for that time of day, or at least easier and faster to prepare than anything else on short notice.

Waffles are among the most common breakfast treat. In fact, they are quite popular in Belgium, France, Netherlands, Poland, Scandinavia, and the United States of America.

That means that there are many, many people who eat waffles daily, and we all know that while repetition can feel safe and comforting, it can also very easily become boring.

Our taste buds can be particularly capricious in this regard. Sometimes, though, there's just nothing else to be had, for a variety of reasons.

In those cases, you might have to resort to other means to make your meal seem interesting, like giving it a higher measure of aesthetic value.

There's not much you can do to visually embellish a waffle though, unless you're really good at painting images using syrup, jam, and slices of fruit.

The Poke-a-Pixel Wafflemaker

Created by aptly named company Quirky, the device is a wafflemaker with one unusual capability: “touch” support on the (removable) bottom plate.

The wafflemaker evokes those old 8-bit video games of yonder times. The food-grade silicone pattern tray basically sits between heating elements. On it, you poke letters, emoticons, or simple shapes.

Basically, it allows you to tap a pattern on it and have that pattern subsequently roasted into the waffle itself. The waffle won't be burned, but it will take a somewhat darker nuance according to your grand vision.

As far as food-related technologies go, it's one of the simplest applications of human imagination, but also one that could catch on the fastest. Simple means easy to implement and, by extension, relatively cheap to add to products too.

All in all, the Quirky Poke-a-Pixel Wafflemaker measures 10.3 x 9.2 x 3.6 inches (261.6mm x 233.7mm x 91.4mm). It is made of Stainless steel, cast iron, and plastic, besides the silicone pattern tray of course. Cleaning should be simple as well.

Availability and pricing

Alas, we're not sure how much the Quirky Poke-a-Pixel Wafflemaker is supposed to cost or when sales will begin. The details haven't been finalized, so we probably have a few weeks to wait still. Nothing we haven't encountered before really, although it doesn't help assuage our curiosity either. Woe is us we suppose.
