The Wildlife Conservation Society has announced that two wildlife rangers in Thailand unfortunately lost their lives while taking part in a gunfight with poachers.

The incident occurred this past September 13 in the country's Thung Yai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary.

Mongabay tells us that one poacher also died during the confrontation. The other four managed to escape and, up until now, authorities have only arrested two of them.

Apparently, the men involved in this incident are guilty of killing not just tigers and elephants, but also other protected animals living in the area.

The Wildlife Conservation Society demands that high officials in Thailand both roll out measures intended to make it easier for rangers to fight poachers, and make sure that the people responsible for these two recent deaths are punished for their actions.

“WCS urges the Government of Thailand to allow rangers of the Western Forest Complex to have up-to-date firearms, to add new guard posts at key access points, to bring the highest quality investigative efforts to the incident and to fully prosecute once the poachers are captured,” the organization reportedly wrote in a statement.
