A new report has taken comic book fans by storm and explains why Robert Downey has been so evasive in recent interviews about the future of his Iron Man role in the Marvel movie universe.

Variety claims that RDJ is in the final stages of negotiation with Marvel, that will see him put on his Iron Man suit much sooner than expected, as he is slated to appear in the “Captain America 3” movie.

Iron Man will appear in “Captain America 3,” is going to be the villain

And if that wasn't exciting enough news for you, Downey and Chris Evans are said to be headed for a confrontation in this movie, as the new film will bring to the screen the famous Civil War storyline from the comics.

The report claims that Tony Stark and Steve Rodgers, the two characters played by Downey and Evans, are going to lock horns for the new movie over the Superhero Registration Act, which basically requires you to register with the authorities in case you have superpowers so that you can be monitored.

Stark is in favor of the program, while Rogers is not, and things get very tense very quick. Because of that, Robert Downey can be viewed as the bad guy in “Captain America 3.”

The deal with Robert Downey Jr. almost fell through because he wanted a bigger part in the movie

But Variety also claims that the project that has you freaking out right now and probably calling friends in excitement almost wasn't going to take place, since Downey and the Marvel execs locked horns over the role.

Initially, Marvel only wanted Robert to play a small role in the movie, a cameo of sorts, that would have allegedly taken him just 3 weeks’ worth of filming, but Downey campaigned for a bigger part that would inevitably land him more money. The conflict escalated and Ike Perlmuter, Marvel Entertainment chief, ordered scribes to cut Iron Man out of the script altogether.

It seems that Kevin Feige, Marvel Studio boss, was the one who mediated the incident and finally got both sides to agree on a series of terms, and now Robert is going to appear in “Captain America 3.”

It turns out that negotiations went so well that Downey will get a bonus couple of millions if “Captain America 3” outperforms “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” at the box office, which is likely to happen since Iron Man is going to take center stage this time around.

Now all we have to do is sit back and wait for the official confirmation from Marvel that “Captain America 3” is a go and that it's also going to star Iron Man. Maybe even get a release date so we can clear our calendar.
