Plextor may have just recently made a move on the optical disk drive market, but it seems that Blu-ray and 3D playback are not enough for the company, as it has now also delivered a DVD writer known as PX-L890SA.

For those interested in a reminder, Plextor just a short time ago brought to market, or said it soon would sell starting this very November, the PX-LB950SA.

Essentially, this is a Blu-ray disk unit which, in addition to being able to write all sorts of disks, can perform 3D playback as well.

The ODD has as another main asset the ability to reach a speed of 12X when scribing data onto Blu-ray disks.

Now, the same company has brought fort the PX-L890SA, also an optical disk drive, albeit somewhat less formidable than its sibling.

The main difference is that the newcomer does not support the Blu-ray format, being limited to reading and writing CDs and DVDs.

CD-RW disks, for instance, are written at 24X, while CD-R disks can go higher, up to 48X.

As for DVDs, the units can run at 24X for DVD-R/+R, 6X for DVD-RW, 8X for DVD+RW and 12X for DVD-R/+R.

This includes both single-layer and dual-layer disks, which means that, for instance, one can record hours of high-quality MPEG-2/DVD video on an 8.5 GB disc.

Since it is an internal drive, the PX-L890SA fits inside a 5.25-inch drive bay and boasts a SATA interface.

It also comes with 1.5MB of buffer memory and the LightScribe technology, which lets users burn customizable labels on any LightScribe compatible disk.

Finally, buffer underrun errors are avoided thanks to the Buffer Underrun Proof technology.

European retailers should be selling the newcomer for a price of about 50 Euro. The product bundle includes Nero 9 Essentials and is backed by a one-year parts and labor warranty.
