Owners of the new Vita won't have to sign a contract with AT&T for the data plans

AT&T has just revealed what sort of data plans it will offer to owners of Sony’s upcoming PlayStation Vita 3G handheld console, who want to have a permanent data connection no matter their location.

The PlayStation Vita is getting ready for its debut this February in the form of a simple, Wi-Fi edition, or a pricier 3G model, which can be paired to a subscription offered by Sony’s exclusive carrier partners.

For U.S. customers, this carrier is AT&T, which has just presented the two data plans that will be offered to owners of the Vita’s 3G edition.

Just like we heard last week, the 3G data plans can offer either a monthly traffic of 250MB, in exchange for $14.99 (around €11.7) or a traffic of 2GB, for $25 (€19.5) a month.

What’s interesting, however, is that new PS Vita owners don’t need to sign a monthly contract, meaning they can freely choose the times they want to benefit from 3G connectivity.

“The high speeds and broad coverage of AT&T’s mobile broadband network mean that PS Vita owners will remain connected to their content and with the world around them, including their friends and other PS Vita owners. PlayStation Vita customers with an AT&T data plan will also have free access at more than 29,000 AT&T Wi-Fi hotspots nationwide,” the mobile carrier said.

New PlayStation Vita owners will be able to activate this 3G subscription straight from the mobile device, provided they set up their billing options. Once they’re hooked up to a data plan, Vita users will be entitled to a free game from the PlayStation Store, although a list of eligible titles has yet to be revealed.

The PlayStation Vita goes on sale in the U.S. on February 22, and will cost $249 (€249), for the Wi-Fi version, while the 3G edition is priced at $299 (€299), without factoring in the aforementioned data plans.
