The upcoming PlayStation Vita might have a hard time competing with the mobile phones or tablets that are launched these days, at least according to the boss of Crysis developer Crytek.

The PlayStation Vita is set to be released around the end of the year or the beginning of 2012, and Sony is quite confident that the new portable console is going to get gamers extremely excited about the possibility of playing on the go and enjoying a high-quality experience.

But while Sony and a few other companies are pretty excited about the prospect of the Vita, Crytek boss Cevat Yerli, isn't too certain on how popular the platform will actually become, largely because of its timing and the huge popularity of mobile phones or tablets.

"The Vita is an absolutely fantastic platform but it will have a hard time, and it might be too late," he told Develop magazine, via CVG. "I love Sony as a company, and we have great relations with them, but the Vita is going to have a hard time against the next generation mobiles and all the tablets."

Yerli also highlighted that the Nintendo 3DS, which was released earlier this year, is already establishing itself as a great handheld platform, so the Vita needs to stand out among such devices with unique features and impressive performance.

"There's also the 3DS investing in this market," he continued. "It's going to be a battle, and it will be about content and the platform's ability to receive the content. Streamlined social connectivity will also be very important."

The PlayStation Vita is set to boast some extremely impressive hardware and will see the release of titles like Uncharted: Golden Abyss or a new, custom BioShock game. As we saw in a recent video, the PlayStation Vita is also going to boast some interesting social features, which allow owners to meet up and interact with others just like them.

The PlayStation Vita, sadly, still doesn't have a release date, with Sony keeping a tight lid on things until it knows for sure where and when it can release the device.
