The new update for the PlayStation Store arrives today and, if up until now it wasn't something that would really spark the interest of players, despite the classic new content like themes or icons, this time the developers are introducing a brand new feature, called Premium Themes. This new update will give PlayStation 3 users the opportunity to upgrade and purchase premium themes that will have a completely customized XMB (Cross Media Bar).

Sony teamed up with Smobile and Disruptive Media Publishers, which have quite a large portfolio of games and images ranging from Bioshock, pictured on the left, to NCAA College to beautiful girls and even Asian anime-based ones, so these new themes will be available for many preferences. However, the difference between the premium and the regular ones is the fact that the former will have a completely custom background image and XMB icons, and they can even come with specific sounds, to deliver a completely revamped experience while navigating through the menu of your favorite console.

The new themes will be found in their own separate section, which will be placed right under the already existing Themes and Wallpapers section of the PSN, and, as always, you will be able to preview all of them before deciding which one to purchase. They will come for prices ranging from 0.99 to 1.99 dollars, and they will be available only for the SCEA territories, which are currently the United States and Canada, so it looks like Europe and Japan will have to wait for these custom goodies.

According to the PlayStation Blog, Sony will be offering from 6 to 10 new premium themes every month, along with the regular free ones. They definitely look very good and people are surely going to buy the ones that appeal to them most. Sony really made a smart move with this offer but it needs to bring this service to other territories if it wants to gain even more profit from this premium content.
