The team at Sony in charge of the PlayStation Network is announcing that it is taking down the service for a routine maintenance period on Monday, May 11, in order to make sure that it delivers the best possible experience for all users.

The official announcement states that the PSN will go down at 9 PM Pacific Daylight Time, which is the equivalent of 4 AM Greenwich Mean Time, and that normal operations will resume at 11 PM PDT, which is 6 AM GMT.

During the maintenance period for the PlayStation Network, users will be unable to get access to account management, PlayStation Video, and the PlayStation Store.

All those who log into their account before the specified period starts will be able to play games and use most other applications.

Sony states, "We endeavor to ensure that PlayStation Network services are available at all times. However, occasionally PlayStation Network may need to be taken offline so we can perform essential maintenance and implement feature enhancements."

The company is not saying what new features it might be aiming to introduce during the Monday downtime, but an official announcement might be made after the maintenance is complete.

PSN plays an important role for the current success of the PlayStation 4

Sony is aiming to keep downtime for its service as low as possible because it has been one of the major reasons for the current success of its current-gen home console.

The company has announced earlier in the year that security is one of its main focuses and that it is trying to make sure that no attacks from external sources can bring the PlayStation Network down for extended periods of time.

Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft are working together to find the sources of Denial of Service strikes against their online infrastructure and limit their impact when possible.

The PlayStation Network is a perfect way for the company to introduce content that PlayStation 4 users are interested in, and the PlayStation Now service might mean that it will deliver a range of video games to players without them having to download content.

Sony is also aiming to create exclusive content for the PSN, and it seems that original series Powers will return in 2016 with a second season on the service.
