According to Sony, Windows Phone user base is too small to justify the port

The official PlayStation application that allows users to connect their smartphones to Sony’s console and do various other stuff has just received a small update.

Unfortunately, there aren’t many details on the changes included in the update, except for the fact that “stability during use of some features has been improved.”

No additional new features have been added in this version, but any improvement is more than welcome, as the PlayStation app does seem to need some tweaking. In the same piece of news, the iOS version of PlayStation app has been updated as well with the same changes.

Citing various reports from users who already updated to the latest version, we can confirm that while the application performs much smoothly now, there are still smartphones where the application is rather laggy when using some of its features, such as the Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One M7.

Hopefully, these issues will be addressed in a future update that we expect to arrive on Android platform in the next couple of weeks.

We also have some news that might be of interest to Windows Phone fans who own a PlayStation console and not an Xbox one. Apparently Sony does not have any plans to launch a Windows Phone version of the PlayStation app.

The information has been confirmed on Reddit by a verified Sony employee, who says that Sony has a huge backlog of features that it wants to put inside the Android/iOS application, which is why it doesn’t have time for the Windows Phone version: “priority goes to features that make us money.”

There have been many rumors, dating back to February, claiming that a PlayStation application might eventually hit Windows Phone soon, but in light of the new more or less official statements we believe it’s highly unlikely to happen this year.

As mentioned earlier, previous rumors have stated Microsoft will develop a PlayStation application for Windows Phone, not Sony, but since we did not hear anything from the Redmond-based company, it’s pretty clear it has dropped the idea of releasing such an app.

The same person also explained Sony’s lack of interest for the Windows Phone platform by highlighting the fact that the platform’s user base is too small for the moment.

Anyway, until Sony thinks Windows Phone’s user base is enough to justify a port, you can download PlayStation app for Android for free via Google Play Store. The application should be fully compatible with most devices powered by Android 4.0 and up.
