RAGE, the soon-to-be-released first-person shooter from publisher Bethesda and developer id Software, will have a mandatory 8 GB install on the PlayStation 3 home console from Sony.

Players will be prompted to install the game as soon as they put in the game disk and there's no option to skip this part of the installation, which probably means that a number of those who are interested in the newest game from id Software need to take a look at their installed content and prepare to delete some of it.

News of the 8 GB hard drive requirement comes from an interview that Tim Willits, the creative director working at id Software, gave to the site PS Focus.

Those who are playing the game on the Xbox 360 from Microsoft are not required to install any of the RAGE game data to their hard drive, but they have an option to do so.

In order to install the game and get advantages like better loading times, they need to make sure that they have a whooping 22 GB of free space on their consoles.

Id Software has not yet said how much install space RAGE will need on the PC.

As game size has gone up during the years, both Sony and Microsoft have responded by increasing the size of the hard drives that are included in their top of the line home consoles, but it seems that in the long term this is a losing battle if RAGE is a sign of things to come.

RAGE, after a number of delays, is now set to be launched on October 4 on the PlayStation 3, the Xbox 360 and the PC, directly competing with other high-profile shooters like Gears of War 3, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3.
