Aside from identifying the best shows of 2005, the US National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS), which awards the Emmy prizes, have also awarded Sony's Play Station.

The gaming console received the Outstanding Achievement in Technology and Advanced New Media award, for innovations brought to 3D graphics.

The first Sony Play Station console was launched in Japan in 1994 and it got to Europe one year later. Before its appearing, the market for console games was dominated by Nintendo, Sega and Atari. Lara Croft and her adventures in Tomb Raider are tightly connected to Play Station's history.

This year, Sony has sold 100 million Play Stations, and not even the Xbox succeeded to stall its ascension.

Ken Kutaragi, CEO Sony Computer Entertainment, said that the award is an honor and that Play Station has redefined the way in which people perceived interactive entertainment.

"When the concept for PlayStation was in its infancy in the early 1990s, we had a dream to elevate the quality of computer graphics from a 2D-based environment to a rich, realistic 3D experience," he said.

The next Play Station console is scheduled to launch next year and it will most certainly go against Microsoft's Xbox 360.

This week, Softpedia would like to know your opinion on gaming consoles. What is your favorite console you either own or you are planning to buy? Are you an Xbox fan or a Playstation fan? Has Xbox360 convinced you it's time to buy one? Or you'll wait for the PS3? Express your opinion here.
