The wait for the free-to-play shooter is finally over

Planetside 2 has been looming over the PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system from Sony for quite some time now, and it looks like it has finally gotten a date tacked on to it. The free-to-play first-person shooter will officially enter beta on the console this January.

The game was initially supposed to land on the PS4 before the end of the year, but fortunately, the delay isn't that significant.

Many people have been waiting to get their hands on the massively multiplayer online shooter since the PS4 came out, and according to Sony's John Smedley, they will now get to, "either the week of the 13th or 20th."

Given the fact that Smedley is the man in charge of Sony Online Entertainment, the news is as legit as it gets. The fact that Planetside 2 would be coming to the PS4 was announced back in 2013, during the E3 trade show, and during this year's edition of the convention we got more coverage of the game.

You can watch the video featuring Creative Director Matt Higby talking about the first-person shooter below, showing a ton of footage and explaining what all the hubbub is about.

Still better with a mouse though

Planetside 2 was initially released on PC during late 2012, as a remake of the 2003 hit Planetside, following the efforts of three warring factions, as they vie for dominance over the planet of Auraxis.

The game offers massive multiplayer battles, with intense action sequences both on the ground and in the air, and enables users to explore vast continents, all set to stunning AAA visuals and the smooth gameplay mechanics that shooter enthusiasts have come to expect from modern iterations of the genre.

The developer previously discussed that it was targeting 1080p resolution and a crisp 60 frames per second framerate on the PlayStation 4, hoping to offer the fidelity of Ultra settings on PC, further revealing that those who enjoyed Planetside 2 on PC would experience the same breadth of content.

The game is essentially the same, just with slightly altered controls, to fit the DualShock 4 controller. This means that Planetside 2 will also get aim assist, to compensate for the reduced precision of the gamepad, but since multiplayer won't be cross-platform, it will not impact the multiplayer experience in any way.
