While automotive companies are doing their best in making ground transportation as environmentally friendly as possible, by constantly improving on the performance levels of electric cars, it seems that air travel is also likely to soon go green.

Recently, the Solar Impulse plane managed to get from Madrid to Morocco powered solely by 12,000 solar cells.

Granted, by comparison to its fuel-craving counterparts, the said plane is not really all that fast: it can only reach speeds of up to 44 MHP, which is approximately 10 times slower than your old-school aircrafts.

However, the plane did succeed in bringing home the fact that green air transportation is well within our reach.

With a little bit of luck – and some hard work on behalf of engineers and scientists – the future might just bring us an upgraded and faster version of the Solar Impulse.
