The Asiana Airlines pilots that crashed a Boeing 777 at San Fancisco International Airport on Saturday were using auto-control and did not realize how low they were flying.

According to the AP, the plane is equipped with automatic speed control, and the pilots weren't aware of the fact that they were going too slow at low altitude until it was too late.

The automatic controls on the South Korean aircraft could have been malfunctioning, but there is no confirmation at this point. The autothrottle was set to 136 knots (157 mph), but the command was never activated.

National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Deborah Hersman has mentioned that they are still investigating the cause of the crash that killed two people and injured many others on the Seoul flight.
