Video game developer Obsidian is ready to reveal more information about the classes that gamers will be able to play in the upcoming Pillars of Eternity and the focus this week is on the rogues and the rangers, characters that are able to take out enemies quickly with powerful attacks.

An official forum post explains that each party needs to have balance and that gamers who are looking for offensive options need to carefully build their characters.

Obsidian explains that, “Rogues rely on the vulnerability of their enemies to inflict devastating attacks in close quarters. Rangers coordinate their strikes with the help of animal companions, creatures with whom rangers form lifelong bonds. Outside of direct combat, rogues and rangers share a skill emphasis in Stealth and are commonly the sneakiest party members.”

The studio is not treating the rogue as a sneaky fighter but as the kind of shock troops that can take out enemies after they exhaust their own attacks on more defensively focused classes.

Finishing Blow, Reckless Assault, and Dirty Fighting are the starting abilities of all rogues and Josh Sawyer, the project director, then goes to explain how the character can be developed as he gains more experience.

Rangers, as the name implies, are more focused on attacking at a distance and on disabling enemies so that their animal companion can deliver the killing blow.

Their starting abilities are Animal Companion, Wounding Shot and Swift Aim.

The class can then specialize and get skills that make their companions even more powerful.

Josh Sawyer says that gamers will be able to get access to other powers via Talents, which will be detailed in a future Pillars of Eternity update.

The game will offer a classic role-playing game experience focused on party mechanics and is set to arrive on the PC before the end of the year.
