These birds nest in the underground, are active during daytime

The birds pictured above are underground owls, and what makes them so very special is the fact that, as their name suggests, they very much enjoy nesting in burrows rather than up in trees.

Furthermore, wildlife researchers explain that, unlike other owls, these birds are mostly active during daytime.

Underground owls are currently living in Florida, but might not be around for long as a result of developers' destroying their natural habitats. Sources say that the picture was taken by photographer Mac Stone, who had to hide the camera in a traffic cone and leave it there in order to even stand a chance at catching these elusive birds on film.

“With their curious stares and shifting poses, they are so completely neurotic it's comical, but how could you blame them? With coyotes lurking, stray dogs sniffing and raptors soaring above, you've got to keep those bright hypnotic-yellow eyes peeled,” Mac Stone told members of the press.
