The orchid's official name is Ophrys Apifera, it was photographed in Spain

While in Spain, British photographer David Chapman chanced to come across the rare orchid pictured above. Luckily for us, he snapped some photos of it and later shared them with the public.

If the flower looks somewhat familiar, this is probably because it very much resembles cartoon character Shrek. If you doubt it, just scroll down to have a look at a picture of the ogre, and maybe reconsider your opinion.

According to Daily Mail, 48-year-old David Chapman first saw one such rare orchid several years ago. At that time, however, he did not become acquainted with the actual flower, but merely with a depiction of it in a book.

Interestingly enough, the photographer took such a liking to the orchid, whose official name is Ophrys Apifera, that he promised to himself that he would eventually see one such flower in real life.

“This is a very special species of flower, I remember having seen them in my wildflower guidebooks and longed to see one in the flesh. When I first saw one I was amazed by how clever their mimicry is and how beautiful the flowers are,” the photographer told the press in a recent interview.

“Despite the bee orchid being very colorful it is extremely difficult to spot because it is tall and thin and grows amongst tall grasses,” 48-year-old David Chapman further explained.
