A Pre-like entry level device

The DROID family of devices seems to have been successful enough for Verizon to expand its reach to a wider audience. Most phones currently included in the series are high-end devices, such as the DROID by Motorola, the DROID Incredible by HTC or the recently released DROID X by Motorola, but mid level handsets are also present there, such as the DROID Eris by HTC. However, according to the latest news around the Internet, Verizon might be preparing for a new handset for the mainstream market, the so called mini DROID.

The new, unannounced mobile phone has been spotted in a series of blurry photos that emerged over at the Hiapk forums (via Android and Me), some of which were attached to this article. No info on the hardware specifications it should arrive with emerged for the time being, nor on its availability or pricing, but chances are that it won't be too long before the wireless carrier and Motorola decide to make it official.

What can be extracted from the aforementioned blurry shots includes the fact that mini DROID should boast a portrait sliding design, much like the popular Palm Pre does. It would include a touchscreen display, complemented by a QWERTY keyboard, and would certainly be included in the DROID family, at least this is what the widely known red eye spotted in the first shot suggests.

For what it's worth, this would not be the first lower-end Android-based mobile phone Motorola brings to the market, nor the first mid-level device it launches on Verizon. However, the mini DROID would certainly fit greatly beside the recently released Charm and Flipout, while showing that the handset vendor is indeed determined to put Android on as many form factors as possible. Since there are no details available on when the new device would be delivered to shelves, we would have to wait and see how long it would take for Motorola and Big Red to make it official.
