14 DAY TRIAL // A couple of days ago, Marvel announced that a new Thor comic book series premiering this fall, together with a new Avengers event, would see Thor as a changed man – literally. As of this moment, Thor is a woman; and the announcement has caused a lot of unrest with loyal fans.
The fans’ chief complaint is that Thor has always been a man, so, if Marvel really wanted to switch things up and introduce a character that would help them cater to a larger female audience, they should have just created a new character or used one that was already available and bring it at the forefront.
By changing Thor from male to female, Marvel is ruining the character, the fans believe. As they’re saying this, they’re also swearing off the comics, and some of them, the film franchises as well – anything to do with Marvel is blacklisted with them.
The creators of the popular website Texts From Superheroes choose to see the humorous side in all this, not in the sense that they’re mocking fans, but rather pointing out to them that all this outrage is out of place with a comic book character.
Thor has been a frog and an alien and even female in some installments, so the change shouldn’t really be as controversial as it is. That’s also the line used by Marvel to try to pacify the fans, but they can’t forget that, on all those occasions, there was an understanding that the change wasn’t permanent, as it is now.
