Just yesterday, the International Space Station chanced to fly over Israel and nearby occupied Palestinian territory. War is currently raging in this part of the world, and astronauts got to witness it first-hand.
The photo above and the one below were taken by Alexander Gerst, one of the astronauts who now find themselves aboard the International Space Station, this past July 23, and posted on Twitter and Facebook shortly after.
“My saddest photo yet. From ISS we can actually see explosions and rockets flying over Gaza & Israel,” Alexander Gerst wrote in the message accompanying the image above on the social media websites.
Since it was shared with the online community until now, the photos has pretty much gone viral. Thus, the images have been retweeted and shared on Facebook thousands of time by folks who are preoccupied with what is happening in Gaza.
If Alexander Gerst is telling the truth – which he probably is – and the war in Gaza can be seen all the way from space, it's safe to assume that one cannot even begin to imagine what is happening on the ground.
In case anyone was wondering, this astronaut has been aboard the International Space Station for the last 60 days. He is accompanied by Maksim Surayev from Russia and Reid Wiseman from the US.
