If you want a phat TV set, yo you'd better check out the new gig from Samsung, yo they've got the phattest technology around, yo the're using PhlatLight solid state light sources for their new HDTVs, word. Now after you've gotten your daily doze of hood slang, let's take things a little further and explain where PhlatLight comes from.

The name came as an attempt to underlie the Photonic Lattice technology, which stands behind the manufacturing process for "the world's first single-chip solid state lighting source powerful enough to illuminate large screen rear-projection TVs and other high definition displays". Normally, the TV sets would use a mercury arc lamp for backlighting, but seeing how LEDs have made a big comeback into the industry, so have other alternatives of these technologies.

Samsung Electronics is just one of the company's many customers, it is said that they have begun shipping a new line of "Slim Depth LED Engine Widescreen DLP HDTVs" using Luminus' PhlatLight LED technology. The key to PhlatLight's success is the patented photonic lattice structures, which incorporate the benefits from both LED and laser technologies. Through these, the televisions that use Luminus Devices' PhlatLight products yield more that 40 percent color than conventional TVs. The frame rate improvement is also said to be remarkable, up to 48 times faster refresh cycles than regular TV frame rates.

By not using mercury in the manufacturing process, the products from Luminus Devices are safer from an environmental point of view, and also have greater performances. And when I say greater performances, I'm referring to the wide color gamut these light sources offer, which have exceeded the color gamut defined by the National Television System Committee (NTSC).
