The device has just been spotted at TENAA

Phillips isn't known for high-end smartphones, in fact the company doesn't really launche phones outside a few Asian countries like China.

But Phillips fans will be pleased to know that the company has a high-end smartphone in the pipeline, which is known as i999, STJ Gadgets reports.

The smartphone is kind of impressive looking at the specs, but not everything is fine and dandy, as there are some hardware components that aren't as new as they should. That would mean that Phillips is still living in the past and that wouldn't be right.

Anyway, since the smartphone has been spotted at TENAA, the Chinese regulatory commission, it means that it will eventually make its debut on the market. That could take weeks or months, probably depending on the handset manufacturer.

Phillips i999 has been confirmed to pack a 5.5-inch capacitive touchscreen display that supports Quad HD (2560 x 1440 pixels) resolution, which puts it in the phablets category.

No word on the version of Android powering the phone

Unfortunately, the smartphone is equipped with an older Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor clocked at 2.5GHz.

We would have expected Phillips to include the newest Snapdragon 810 chipset inside, but it looks like the company had something else in mind.

The quad-core processor inside is complemented by 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal memory, but there's no word on microSD card slot for memory expansion.

We also know that Phillips i999 will boast a powerful 20-megapixel rear-facing camera with dual-LED flash, autofocus and video recording, as well as a secondary no less impressive 8-megapixel camera in the front for video calls and perfect selfies.

The listing at TENAA also mentions that Phillips i999 has a fingerprint scanner on the back, right below the camera.

Obviously, there are no details on price and availability, but we expect the i999 will be released in China and remain there for a long time (forever?).
