A tubular overhead LED light has an intensity of 200 lumens per watt

LED lighting is already gaining traction and replacing florescent bulbs, thanks to low power use compared to normal light bulbs, but Philips thinks it can do better. Much better.

Philips has revealed a prototype of a tubular overhead LED light that produces 200 lumens of light per watt of energy.

That's twice as much as its current products, and it suggests that 5W of electricity can generate the same amount of light as a 60W light bulb.

Obviously, this is a great achievement, which makes us rather sad that Philips doesn't think it will commercialize its technology before 2015.

To make it all happen, engineers tuned the light the lamp gives off and optimized the coating material that converts blue LED light to white light (LED semiconductor and the phosphor).
