The energy efficiency benefits cannot be ignored any longer

The first attempts to use LED as streetlights were met with ambivalent reactions when snow covered them completely and traffic suffered, but that didn't mean LED lighting wasn't going to take off.

Sure, it hasn't happened yet, but there are enough LED bulbs of all sorts in the world for there to be a momentum.

Philips believes that, in 2014, the momentum will be good enough for OLED, a more advanced form of LED (organic light emitting diodes) to ride the current.

The luminance of OLED in 2013 will reach 4,300cd/m2, while brightness efficiency will jump to 45-60lm/W by the end of the year.

Because of that, Philips believes, the market will prosper next year, especially if the brightness efficiency goes to 90lm/W and luminance to 5,000cd/m2.

The lifespan of 20,000 hours will work in its favor as well, although it might only be reached in 2015.
