Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds is coming out on PC this week, expected to land on Steam on January 23.

The game was initially released for the Xbox 360 home console back in early 2013, sporting a distinct chibi aesthetic and being a side-scrolling beat'em up spin-off of the Phantom Breaker fighting video game series.

Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds is essentially a sort of anime version of The Behemoth's highly acclaimed Castle Crashers, featuring parrying and counter systems and fluid non-stop action, meaning that it's a worthy contender for fans of the genre.

Players can choose one character out of a cast of four and have to fight against large groups of ninjas in an urban environment, just like in the heyday of beat'em ups.

The game also boasts local cooperative multiplayer support, but for the time being, it's not clear whether the feature will also be available online or not.

New to the West

Castle Crashers is a great and exciting game, and if you're looking for something else in the same vein and are able to stomach the cutesy chibi visuals, then this might just be it.

You can get an idea of how the game plays by watching the gameplay trailer below, showing the cast deal with a bunch of ninjas, robots and zombies.
