There are many ways that a display can succeed in standing out from the fold and Perceptive Pixel may have just chosen the most straightforward of the lot, that being sheer size.

A liquid crystal display can, in most cases, qualify as large format from even just 50-55 inches in diagonal upwards.

However, even those big panels, be they consumer HDTVs or professional/enterprise solutions, will look small next to what Perceptive Pixel created.

Basically, the company developed a projected capacitive touch-enabled LCD whose screen diagonal is of a full 82 inches.

It also has the asset of having a thickness (depth) of just 6 inches, plus a refresh rate of 120 Hz that goes just fine with the native resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels (Full HD).

"Multi-touch has become fundamental to the way we interact with technology," said Jeff Han, founder and chief scientist, Perceptive Pixel.

"Five years ago here at SIGGRAPH, we introduced the first large-scale true multi-touch display based on rear projection technology. I'm proud to be back at SIGGRAPH 2011 with another industry first – a truly flat-panel 82" display featuring the highly responsive, unlimited multi-touch experience that is the hallmark of our company."

For those that want to know even more details, the response time is of 1 ms and will show its mettle best in concept pitches, design reviews, storyboarding, brainstorming sessions, etc.

"No other company can deliver the precision and performance of our best-in-class optically bonded pro-cap displays," said David Slobodin, VP hardware engineering at Perceptive Pixel.

"Our new 82" multi-touch LCD represents a technological breakthrough that sets a new standard for the display industry."

Unfortunately, though the official announcement was made, Perceptive Pixel did not actually say when sales will start or what price prospective buyers will need to be willing to pay in exchange.
