People who cannot function unless they have a cup of coffee shortly after waking up would do best to stop drinking it, specialists say.

Apparently, the buzz these people think they get from their morning cup of coffee is not so much a buzz as it is a tell-tale sign that they are addicted to this drink.

Thus, those who feel tired and experience both mental fogginess and headaches whenever they attempt starting their day without drinking coffee are actually experiencing withdrawal symptoms, sources say.

The catch is that, once a person becomes addicted to coffee, they feel the need to consume ever-increasing amounts, simply because the drink quits being all that efficient in terms of making them feel energized.

On the long term, this increased coffee consumption can only prove detrimental to one's health.

“They just don't function normally without the drug on board. If it's your first tea or coffee of the day, it gets you back to normal, but beyond that you don't get much more of a kick.”

“On balance, caffeine is not particularly helpful. It triggers withdrawal and increases your blood pressure, which is not a good thing,” Professor Peter Rogers explains.
