Keepers at Chester Zoo in the United Kingdom are fairly busy these days. Thus, several Humboldt penguin chicks have recently hatched at this facility, and caretakers say that others will follow in the days to come.

In a recent interview with the press, staff at Chester Zoo explained that they had decided to name the baby penguins born at this facility this year after past and present football superstars.

Thus, the first chick to hatch is now known as Rooney, Zoo Borns informs. According to the same source, this baby penguin was shortly followed by Gerrard, Banks, and Moore.

“Choosing names for the chicks is always a poser but with one eye on the World Cup we decided to kick off this year’s football campaign with some stars of our own,” caretaker Karen Neech explained the decision to choose these names for the baby penguins.

Presently, the chicks are looked after by their parents. Keepers say that they all appear to be well taken care of, and that their old folks are feeding them regularly.

“Footballers have very strict diets and things are just the same for our new arrivals. But whereas footballers can look forward to a protein shake ours grow strong on a diet of regurgitated ‘fish smoothie’ provided by their parents,” Karen Neech said.
