The NSW Police believes that in most cases they were faced with, data breaches could have been prevented if organizations would have conducted penetration tests to point out the weaknesses in their systems.

These tests are highly useful and recommended for companies to highlight the vulnerabilities that would allow attackers to take over.

"I don't know why more people don't do it. It could be too expensive, but consider the the pain of recovery after your business is breached," revealed Detective superintendent Bruce van der Graaf for SC Magazine.

The detective also mentions the fact that additional police resources are needed in order to face and handle the effects of the threats that come from the Internet.

"This year has been a challenge, a big learning curve," van der Graaf added. "We are [starting to] appreciate the scale and sophistication of the crimes."
