The versus experience won't appear as DLC for Payday 2

Payday 2 developer Overkill Software wanted to focus on delivering a great cooperative experience with the latest game in the series but it isn't ruling out a potential cops vs. robbers competitive mode in the third installment.

Payday: The Heist delivered a bold cooperative shooter that put players behind the masks of four bank robbers who needed to execute different heists.

In Payday 2, those mechanics have been refined and lots more variety has been added by Overkill Software, which enriched the cooperative experience.

Even so, quite a few fans are wondering if the developers are thinking about an inevitable competitive mode that allows them to control not just the robbers but also cops who are trying to stop them.

According to Director David Goldfarb, the main focus with this game was on the cooperative experience, meaning a competitive mode won't be released as DLC for it.

"The one thing, without going into too much detail, is we made a lot of decisions on this game that were ambitious and risky, and one of the reasons that we were able to get it out on time and make it generally a good game is that we didn't entertain a lot of stuff that was outside of our core focus, and the core focus is not versus," Goldfarb told RPS.

This main pillar can change with the next installment, according to Goldfarb, but he's not ready to confirm anything just yet.

"The core focus is co-op. So when we revisit whatever we're going to do for the next one maybe that'll change. When you make a versus game it puts you in a different place, and then your attention is kind of split."

"It was good that we kept our focus and enabled us to finish this game. Now I'm not going say we would never consider it, but that's what we did on this one."

Overkill is currently working on new updates for Payday 2, as well as plenty of DLC.
