Payday 2 developer Overkill Software is thrilled to see rivals appear in its online heist niche, as both Grand Theft Auto 5 and Battlefield Hardline are making serious headway into this segment of the shooter market.

Payday: The Heist and its successor, Payday 2, delivered thrilling first-person shooter experiences that had fans pulling off all sorts of crazy heists, from robbing banks and jewelry stores, to hijacking shipments of precious cargo, and all sorts of other criminal activities.

Payday 2 has become quite successful ever since its debut back in 2013 for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360, receiving all sorts of different free and premium DLC packs. At the beginning of summer, Payday 2: Crimewave Edition is going to launch on PS4 and Xbox One, and developer Overkill is showing no signs of stopping when it comes to supporting the game.

Overkill welcomes competition from other games

What's more, according to Overkill's Almir Listo, the studio is glad to see that other major games are making their way onto the online heist niche. These include Grand Theft Auto 5, which just saw its multiplayer robberies appear as a free update to the game on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One, as well as Battlefield Hardline, which deals with cops and robbers.

Listo explains that the Payday 2 community is huge right now, especially on the PC, and many will soon return to the game after exploring rivals. Overkill's staff will also have fun with the titles mentioned above, both as players but also as developers who analyze what's done right and what could use some more work.

"We’re not in a position any more where we have to be scared," he tells VG247. "We have our community and we know what they want and this just makes the heists genre more popular. From our perspective we just welcome the challenge. Any competition can only make our game better. We will of course play their games and have a lot of fun and we’ll learn from them, what they did good and what they could have done better."

Payday 2: Crimewave Edition is set to debut in June for PS4 and Xbox One. Meanwhile, more and more updates and add-ons are launching for the PC version of the shooter.
