Millionaire Matchmaker star gets into trouble over generalization of the gays

Patti Stanger of Millionaire Matchmaker landed herself in very troubled waters when, on the premiere of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen on Bravo, she made a series of very offensive remarks about the gays.

Stanger is now apologizing for the offense she caused, Us Weekly reports.

Part of Stanger’s appearance is in the video below, embedded at the end of the article, and will more than explain why it got people so inflamed: she generalizes and doesn’t even realize when she’s out of line.

The controversial debate began when the topic of open relationships was brought up, with Stanger saying that gays thrive in this type of relationships – thus hinting that they can’t be monogamous.

“There’s no curbing the gay. I’ve tried to curb you people and you just don’t [change]. I’ve decided to throw in the towel and just say, ‘Do what you want. But when you find the right person, you will know’,” Stanger said, much to the horror of host Cohen, who is openly gay.

She didn’t stop here either, telling another caller that he looked straight and that this was actually a “compliment” because no one wants to look “queeny.”

Initially, as people started reacting to her interview, Stanger tried to downplay the whole thing on Twitter, saying in a very offhanded manner that she stood by what she’d said.

“It’s true. L.A. guys [are] toughest nuts to crack to monogamy. Attention male gays: I support you and my comment on [Watch What Happens Live] was to an L.A. guy who can’t find commitment,” she wrote.

However, as the debate got more heated and more voices accused her of homophobia, Stanger issued a proper apology in a statement to the aforementioned publication.

“I am so sorry. I did not mean to offend anyone with my comments last night on Watch What Happens Live,” she said.

Bravo also took a stand, issuing a separate statement to apologize for Stanger’s comments.

“[The network] regrets the comments expressed by Patti Stanger on Watch What Happens Live last night. Her comments are not representative of the network’s beliefs and opinions. We apologize for the offense it caused,” says the statement from Bravo.
