After announcing, no later than a couple of weeks ago, that he was determined to beat cancer until a cure was found, actor Patrick Swayze has reportedly given up on chemo therapy after doctors told him there was almost nothing that could be done for him. US magazine the National Enquirer, which is the same publication who broke the story of Swayze having cancer, writes in today’s issue that the actor is determined to live the rest of his life in control.

Apparently, a friend of Swayze has spoken with the magazine and has revealed that, since the doctors have seemingly told him that there was nothing that they could do to stop the progress of the disease, he has come to the decision to take control over the remaining days of his life. All cancer treatment has been stopped, despite Patrick’s initial statement that he would do what it took to fight the disease and last at least two more years, until a cure was found.

“There’s nothing more doctors can do for him. We are down to the wire and the goal now is to keep Patrick comfortable. His condition is inoperable and they have stopped the chemo. He’s still losing weight and he’s very weak.” the friend tells the Enquirer. Nevertheless, this does not mean that the actor, whose case got all fans and non-fans alike show their support in one way or another, is giving up the fight yet. “Patrick regards himself as a cowboy, and is determined to die with his boots on and no regrets.” the same insider explains.

If true, this would come to bring down the brave attitude Swayze had when interviewed by Barbara Walters for a televised one-hour special. “I’d say five years is wishful thinking. Two years seems likely if you’re going to believe the statistics. There’s more I want to do. Lots more. I want to last until they find a cure.” Patrick said at the time. Of course, also then, he admitted to living in fear and anger, but said that he was determined not to let the disease get the best of him.

Patrick Swayze was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer one year ago. Since the cancer had already spread to his liver when it was discovered, it was inoperable. In most pancreatic cancer cases, medical experts say the rate of survival after diagnosis is under six months. “When you are as determined an individual as Swayze, you want to have some control over how you spend your last days. I am sure he will summon every last vestige of strength to fulfill his desire.” Dr. Judy Kuriansky, a leading clinical psychologist who did not treat the actor, stated for the National Enquirer.
