Just a few days after Parted Magic 5.3 came out, an update was released, mainly to fix an issue affecting the previous release. Parted Magic 5.4 fixes an issue which caused keyboard input to slow down. Despite the short time between releases, several other issues have been fixed as well and some packages updated.

"For some unknown reason keyboard input slowed down in the last release. Updating the kernel seems to have fixed the problem. NTFS file systems not being mounted as read-write while using G4L is fixed. We also moved to AUFS, which improves RAM usage even more," Parted Magic's Patrick Verner wrote in the official announcement on the homepage. Highlights of Parted Magic 5.4:

· Linux kernel 2.6.35.3; · alsa-lib 1.0.23; · alsa-utils 1.0.23; · DHCP 4.2.0; · GRUB 1.98.

Parted Magic 5.3 was affected by a rather strange problem which slowed down keyboard input. The Linux kernel was updated which fixed the issue. Parted Magic 5.4 also makes the switch to the newer Linux kernel 2.6.35 line, up from the previous Linux kernel 2.6.34.

Another issue which prevented NTFS file systems from being mounted in read-write mode while using G4L was fixed in the release. Parted Magic 5.4 also marks the move to AUFS which the developers say should further improve memory usage.

Parted Magic 5.3 had just moved from UnionFS to UnionFS-fuse so the update is somewhat surprising. Several distros, large and small have been making the switch from UnionFS lately, from Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to the recent Zenwalk 6.4 Live.

Parted Magic 5.4 also comes with a few updated packages including the GRUB boot manager.
