They are also great metalsmiths and traders

The team at Paradox Development Studio continues to reveal the core lore elements of its upcoming Runemaster experience and this time the focus is on the Dwarves, the sources used to create their unique look and the way they will be able to influence the game world based on Norse mythology.

Most gamers will be instantly familiar with the race that resides in Svartalfheim and Jotunheim, but they might be surprised to know that, in addition to working metal and creating artifacts, they are also lustful when it comes to goddesses like Freya, who spent a night with each of four dwarves in order to secure the Brisingamen necklace.

The race will sport beards in Runemaster, regardless of their gender, and they will also be short and interested in getting access to as much beer as possible.

Paradox states on the forums that “The life of a Dwarf is often a strenuous and hazardous one, and thus the average lifespan can be very short. Therefore the ones who do live to be older withdraw from the cumbersome work of mining and smithery so they can study the ancient texts. These older Dwarfs are very revered for their knowledge.”

The Kings of the dwarves are elected, and although bribes are common, there are moments when low class citizens get the job, which tends to disrupt the lives of the nobility.

A focus on trade and on blacksmithing

In Runemaster, the race has two different languages, one used for actual conversations and for writing and another that’s used to mark rocks and to write warnings for the weapons that they create.

The second tongue is also designed to serve as a cover, with the dwarves saying that it has magical properties just to mislead other races and hide how they actually place enchantments on the artifacts they create.

Paradox adds, “The Dwarfs produce all sorts of weapons, armor and some potions made from the mushrooms and plants grown in the dark. They can, in fact, make almost anything you might ask for, and will invent anything they might need. With their special mixture of magic and technology, the Dwarfs can make virtually anything.”

The dwarf heroes can be either a female berserker or a male Runemaster, and their unique units include an avatar, which is basically an armor powered by magic, a witch that can cast powerful spells, and the mouflon cavalry, which uses sheep as mounts as they charge into battle.

Runemaster will be out on the PC and the PlayStation 4 during the coming winter.
