Fatshark, as the developer, and Paradox Interactive, as the publisher, have announced that they are working on a new video game called War of the Roses, previously known as Project Postman, which will take gamers back to the battlefields of the England of the XV century.

The game will try to deliver a team based melee oriented multiplayer combat experience, with players able to use such classic medieval weapons as battleaxes, swords, longbows and shields to prove that they are better than their opponents on the field of battle.

War of the Roses will be played from a third person perspective, with the camera close to the player character, allowing gamers to see how their character fights and improve their technique.

The developers are saying that players will move through a progression system which will allow them to gain upgrades and unlock new content as they gain more experience.

Despite the team based multiplayer focus War of the Roses will also have a single player campaign which will explain the basic mechanics and will allow players to practice before playing with other people.

Martin Wahlund, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Fatshark, has said, “Our team’s very passionate about multiplayer, and we’re using everything we’ve learned from our previous projects to capture the thrill of the pitched medieval battle. It’s amazing to hear Fredrik Wester call this a ‘dream game’ for them. They’re the perfect partner for us.”

Gordon Van Dyke, a senior producer at Paradox Interactive, added, “War of the Roses will give players face-to-face melee combat they rarely see in today’s third-person and first-person online shooters. We’re looking to steep players in that savagery, and challenge them to confront their opponents head-on in this unique multiplayer game".

War of the Roses is set to be launched at some point during 2012.
