Curiously, the World Cup drives are the normal ones of the lot

As you may or may now know, the FIFA World Cup is underway, which means that pretty much everyone who sells anything has launched or will launch something based on the series of events. Panram is the latest example, though it's not just football that it's thinking of.

The IT company has unleashed the World Cup line of flash drive units, with the national flags of six different teams, specifically Brazil, France, Italy, Argentina, Australia and Spain.

The flags will last for a long time, no matter how much you fiddle with the drives between your fingers, thanks to UV printing. Alas, that's about all we can say as far as “perks” go.

You see, Panram chose not to make the newcomers particularly fast, sticking to the USB 2.0 technology even though USB 3.0 is common at this point, and prices would probably not have suffered that much from it.

Not that we know what the prices are. The company's press release only said they would be “great,” but nothing else. You'll have to wait for retailers to list them. They all have a capacity of 8 GB by the way.

At least this restrain in regard to performance, if that's what it's called, doesn't extend to all the flash drives in Panram's product collection.

Case in point, there is a second line of drives that the company is ready to sell, called Jewel. You can probably get an idea of their looks just from their name. Don't worry though, we have also included a press photo of them, below.

They all measure 20 x 12.2 x 6.5 mm / 0.78 x 0.48 x 0.25 inches and weigh 1.5 grams. So don't let the image fool you, the blue and red drives were just shot at different scale.

Anyway, the items get their names from two things: the diamond cut jewel cap, and the “refined” zinc alloy housing. Since most flash drives are housed in plastic, it's always a nice surprise to see metal instead.

Furthermore, the Panram Jewel Series don't just have 8 GB capacity. Instead, they can be found, or will be found in 4 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB (no 8 GB at all, oddly enough).

Needless to say, if you, for some obscure reason, only have USB 2.0 on your PC, or whatever other electronic device you're linking the Jewel to, the drive will still work. Performance will just be limited to 480 Mbps instead of 5 Gbps. Once again, prices are unknown.
