3D, video-capable hardware, both consumer and professional, is still rather underrepresented, with full-HD, 3D monitors and TVs still rather few in number, or, at least, in a rather low variety. Panasonic seems to want to be at the forefront of the 3D industry and has announced that its Consumer Electronics Show exhibition will include a 152-inch, full-HD, 3D Plasma display

The TV makes use of Panasonic's newly developed, super-efficient, quadruple luminous efficiency technology. This technology is used as part of the ultra high-speed, 3D drive technology that improves the panel illuminating speed to about a fourth of the standard. It is this feature that allows the 152-inch screen to display high-quality, rapid, 3D content in a resolution of 4,096 x 2,160 pixels (4k x 2k), which is four times the full-HD specification (1,920 x 1,080). Not only that, but the improved speed even enables contrast ratios of 5,000,000:1.

The second technology employed in the device is one that deals with Cross-talk reduction. 3D involves alternate displays of both left- and right-eye images and, naturally, the overall viewing quality is increased when the overlap between them is reduced. PDPs have an advantage over 3D liquid crystal displays (LCDs) in the way that plasma screens display images frame by frame very quickly. The Cross-talk technology minimizes double images through the use of newly developed phosphors with a short luminescence decay time. Compared with regular phosphors, the ones used in the 152-incher have a luminescence decay time one third that of conventional phosphors. The quality is further improved by the illumination control technology.

The product promises to deliver immersive, high-quality and ultra-high resolution, full-HD, 3D content playback and will seamlessly render all Hollywood 3D titles. Panasonic will be focusing on increased collaboration with studios and broadcasters and aims to further enhance the 3D business, even leading to a whole-new industry (3D economic system) by encouraging the interaction among the related businesses.
