Users will be able to take still images from 4K video

Present on the grounds at Photokina 2014, Panasonic did not only take the opportunity to launch a bunch of new cameras into the wild, but also announced several firmware updates for some of its most popular products.

It’s the case of the Lumix DMC-GH4, which sports 4K video recording capabilities. With the new update, owners of the camera will add a new tethered shooting feat plus the 4K Photo Mode (as seen at Dpreview).

This function will set up parameters optimized for shooting stills. Furthermore, it also allows 4K capture in a variety of formats, including 4:3, 3:2, or 1:1, in additional to the already existing 16:9.

But starting now, all modes will be able to produce a still image with 8MP resolution, so the end result will be a JPEG image cropped out of the video footage.

While shooting 4K video in 4K Photo Mode, users will be able to mark the portion they desire as a JPEG output by virtue of pressing the Fn1 button.

More than that, the Loop Rec has been added to the slew of improvements, which means that the camera will continuously be saving the 5 newest 2-minute video files, while deleting the previous footage from the card, giving photographers a chance to capture the perfect moment.

Additional upgrades include the addition of 4K video recording in 23.98p (MP4, AAC) and remote camera control by PC via USB.

The firmware should be available from the Panasonic website starting this October.
