Following the rumor about a new Panasonic GH4 camera capable of capturing 4K videos, Panasonic has just announced Maicovicon, a new image sensor that supports 4K2K HD movie capture.

As Panasonic puts it, the new sensor will be the “lowest noise sensor in the market.”

From the published PDF file, we also find out that this sensor would come with a new “On Chip Filter” for improved sensitivity, which would deliver high resolution still images even in low light or high bright conditions.

Moreover, the Maicovicon sensor is capable of capturing 4K2K HD movies at 30fps and features a high speed mode of 240fps to 481fps.

Judging from the available technical specs, this new sensor is the perfect candidate to power the upcoming Panasonic GH4 camera rumored to be released in the first half of 2014.

The rumors said that Panasonic GH4 would be a fully video-oriented camera, but judging from the new sensor specifications, it is likely that the GH4 will also be able to capture still images.

The camera will probably be out before next year's Photokina image fair at a price somewhere around $2,999 / € 2,218.

For those who missed our previous report, the Panasonic GH4 will feature a partial modular design and will have the following specs:

- 4K at 24 / 25 / 30fps - 16mp sensor with full pixel readout - 10bit 4:2:2 codec (likely AVC Ultra) - 200Mbit MP4 ALL-I and 100Mbit IPB options - Adapter that sits on the camera has 4x 3G-HD-SDI and 2x XLR - Up to 30fps in 4K mode - OLED monitor, 1 million dot - 21mm OLED viewfinder, 3 million dot - Form factor similar to the GH3 but slightly larger, all output jacks facing out of the left side - Time code.
